Life in Perspective: The Art and Power of the Annual Life Review by Tiago Forte — book cover

Most of what you lived this year will be forgotten by next month.

Think about how much happens in a single year of your life. Thousands of experiences. Hundreds of insights and lessons. Dozens of meaningful relationships and projects.

Without a systematic review process, 99% of that value is lost.

The years blur together. The lessons fade. And you end up repeating the same patterns, wondering why nothing changes.

Life in Perspective will show you how to reclaim that value — and use it to shape the next chapter.

A Proven Process for Reflecting on Your Life

At the core of the book is the ARC Method — a three-stage annual review process refined over 15 years and taught to over 1,000 students worldwide.

Appreciate the Past

Gather vivid, specific memories of what went well and what you’re grateful for.

Reflect on the Present

Look for patterns, themes, and insights that reveal what you’ve learned and what matters most to you.

Create the Future

Turn what you’ve discovered into an intentional vision and plan for what comes next.

Hi, I’m Tiago Forte

Nearly 20 years ago, I sat on a Brazilian beach at dawn with a notebook, trying to make sense of my life. A few weeks earlier, a local drug trafficker had pressed a gun to my chest. That encounter forced a question I couldn’t ignore: What am I doing with the time I have?

That morning, I listed everything I was grateful for from the past year. By the time I finished, I noticed I was happiest when traveling, teaching, and learning. That one insight changed the course of my life. I didn’t know it then, but I’d just completed my first annual review.

I’m the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Building a Second Brain and The PARA Method, with over 500,000 copies sold in 25+ languages. My work has been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, and more.

Completing my annual review remains the single most important project I undertake every year. The quality of everything else in my life hinges on the depth of honesty I reach in my reviews. I’ve taught the Annual Review to over 1,000 students worldwide since 2019, and I can’t wait to share the best of what I’ve learned with you.

“I went from being lost and unhappy about my year, to seeing it for all of its amazing moments of connection, accomplishment, and curiosity. I now have a much clearer sense of self.”

“It’s a rare gift to find perspective on life as it unfolds, usually at a pace too fast for intuitive prompts. Tiago’s approach in his annual workshops is deep, wise, practical, and inspiring. That he has taken the time to present it in book form will create a lasting treasure for many.”

A Different Kind of Annual Review

If you’ve tried annual reviews before and found them draining, this book will change that. The approach in Life in Perspective challenges conventional thinking about reflection:

Intuition over analysis

Instead of dissecting your life like a spreadsheet, you’ll learn to follow the signals your body and emotions are already giving you.

Pleasure over sacrifice

This should feel like a conversation with your best friend, not a performance review. When something is genuinely enjoyable, you don’t need willpower to sustain it.

Concrete over abstract

No vague resolutions. You’ll work with real artifacts — photos, journal entries, calendar events — that ground your reflection in what actually happened.

Appreciation over criticism

Most reviews ask “What went wrong?” This one starts with “What went surprisingly well?”

“‘Life in Perspective’ is a singular blend of exceptional life experience, actionable frameworks, and profound inner work. I look forward to returning to it every year as an ongoing guided journey back to myself.”

“There was no hoopla or guru BS, just well-constructed adult ideas, facilitation, and interaction. It evoked in me a great mix of inner calm and inspiration to make some important changes.”

You don’t need any special tools or experience. Just a notebook and the willingness to see yourself clearly.

Stay in the Loop

“I have been setting goals for the last 15 to 20 years on an annual and monthly basis, but the annual goals that I set never felt so attractive and consistent to me before I learned to take the review much more seriously than the actual planning.”

“The process has given me amazing insights into myself, my place in the world and in my life, what I truly want and what I only claim to want because I feel I should. It is so much more than just reviewing a mere year of your life.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an annual review?

An annual review is a structured practice of reflecting on the past year, understanding the present, and intentionally shaping the future. Think of it as a deep life review, not a performance evaluation.

How is this different from Building a Second Brain and The PARA Method?

While Building a Second Brain and The PARA Method focus on organizing external knowledge and projects, Life in Perspective is about internal reflection and making sense of your life experiences. It’s the vital connection between what you know and who you are becoming.

I have taken the Annual Review course. Is this the same content?

Not exactly. While the book covers the same core ARC Method, it goes much deeper into the philosophy, science, and personal stories behind the practice. It also introduces new concepts and practices that weren’t part of the course. Think of the book as the definitive, expanded guide that gives you a richer understanding of why and how the process works, plus new tools to take your practice further.

Do I need to have read Tiago’s other books first?

No. Life in Perspective is a completely standalone book. Whether you’re brand new to Tiago’s work or a longtime reader, this book will meet you where you are.

What formats is the book available in?
